This is a landmark drive for me as it is my first USB 3.0 compatible drive. When I upgraded my laptop last year one of my key requirements was that it have USB3 ports (yes, you do need your computer to be USB3.0 compatible to get the increased speed). I am so sick of USB 2's sluggish transfer speeds and this was finally the test to see what the difference would actually be. The hype loves the `10x faster' claims, but these refer to theoretical maximum transfer rates, which nobody ever actually gets. The result is actually quite pleasing quick, not instantaneous and not gobsmacking, but a definite improvement. Just guessing I'd say loading times for large (1GB+) files is around 3, maybe 4 times faster than via USB2 which really does make a difference. So, USB 3.0 is a "good thing". What about the rest? I have to say I really like what Seagate have done with this drive. The look is basic yet attractive, with a metal (probably aluminium) rack underneath... This review is from: Seagate STAY2000202 2TB Expansion 3.5 inch Hard Drive (Accessory) This hard drive is an excellent product and offers great value for money at less than 100 for 2TB of storage. Although it is USB 3 compatible I am just using it through my existing USB 2 connection on my rather old PC. This works fine but just does not have the additional speed USB 3 would offer Seagate STAY2000202 2TB Expansion 3.5 inch Hard Drive. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By This review is from: Seagate STAY2000202 2TB Expansion 3.5 inch Hard Drive (Accessory) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme ( What's this?) What can I say - I've been using Seagate 1TB and 2TB external Expansion drives for ages. I have about 10 of them. The only Issue I've had with them to date is the data transfer performance. The average sustained write speed for a large file is around 40MB/s.Now, with the new USB3 version (assuming you have a USB3 socket in your PC - not all do, so be sure to check) I am able to sustain write speeds of 120MB/s. All tests were carried out copying a 10GB MPEG2 video file to the drive. That's a 3x performance increase over the old model. Erm WOW! It's really a no-brainer. Especially as they cost about the same or less than the old USB2 version. Recommended. |
