5.0 out of 5 stars Apple's little magic box, 19 Mar 2012
This review is from: New Apple TV (Latest Model - Launched Mar 2012) (Electronics)
Don't let the negative review below put you off. For only 99 this little box can do so much and is a must-have if you are the owner of an iOS device and use your TV as the centre of your home entertainment system. Pay per view films aside, I brought this device as an alternative to the AirPort Express (79), just so I can stream my music from my iPhone to my lounge speakers, which plug directly into my TV. Not only does AirPlay sound fantastic (hard to tell the difference between it and a wired setup) but for an extra 20 you can do so much more. For instance, if you own an iPhone 4S or iPad 2/3 then you can use AirPlay Mirroring so you can see and hear your phone on your TV. This effectively turns your iPhone into a PS3/Xbox - playing Fifa 12, Real Racing 2 or Infinity Blade 2 over AirPlay has to be seen to be believed. The possibilities are endless! The Apple TV also lets you show of your photos on the TV like a giant photo viewer. And of course being an Apple product the box... Read more

I received my new 3rd gen Apple TV this morning and so far it's better than I expected. I did have the overpriced Apple HDMI connector to connect my iPad to the TV, but it was a bit cumbersome and limited - this little box seemed like a much better way of doing things. The beauty of wireless connection cannot be underestimated!

Not only does it stream effortlessly from iTunes on my laptop via Homesharing but the mirroring option is decent too - playing games apps will be great fun on a bigger screen. Yes, it's a shame that popular streaming / downloading apps like iPlayer and 4OD aren't built-in, but this is a universal device so tailoring it for the UK isn't very realistic, and if you have an iPad it's easy enough to use AirPlay or mirroring to watch them on your TV.

As usual with Apple products, the TV is beautifully sleek and discreet (packaged nicely!) and only takes a few minutes to set up. I haven't yet tried downloading films but I did try an HD sample and... Read more

The Apple TV has been around for years, always according to Apple as merely a 'hobby'. The latest iteration does little to change that unfortunately.

The ATV runs iOS, like the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch, but it has no app store. With no store, instead you must rely on the small selection of apps the device ships with, and it's a pretty disappointing line-up. I'll list a few common services and whether the ATV supports them, or not. (as of March 2012)

BBC iPlayer - No
4OD - No
ITV Net Player - No
Sky Go - No
Demand 5 - No
LoveFilm Instant - No
Netflix - Yes
Blinkbox - No
YouTube - Yes
Vimeo - Yes
Spotify - No
Last FM - No
Flickr - Yes

You do of course also get access to Apple's iTunes store, which has the best HD (720p and 1080p) streaming movie selection anywhere, although prices are as eye wateringly high as other pay per view services. (4.50 per rental) Also I personally have always found the... Read more
